Blackboard is pleased to support open education opportunities and massive open online courses (MOOCs) through CourseSites by Blackboard, a free, hosted and scalable online learning platform. Explore and enroll in courses below or start your own now.

From the beginning Blackboard showed in this platform their commitment to support standards and to be more open. This year they also started to promote the platform for MOOCs. In this video they show what they offer:

At the Online Educa Berlin I got a preview of the new Blackboard product xpLor. xpLor is a Learning Object Repository in the cloud which is fully integrated in Blackboard Learn, but also in Moodle and Sakai:

Over the past 15 years the Learning Management System has transformed education enabling you to create rich interactive learning materials, effective online assessments, and interactive discussion.
But the LMS can build walls between educators, making it difficult to share content they create or use content other have shared.
XpLor implements modern software standards and removes the restrictions of LMS-based software allowing you to use the same learning materials in various LMS environments wint unprecendented ease.

Blackboard has now made an infographics to explain what xpLor is supposed to do.

The impression I got from the demo is that it is something that can really help the OER movement. It makes it much easier for instructors to share and re-use open content. Especially because they are not only integrating it with Blackboard, but also with Moodle and Sakai.

De opvolger van Chasen is Jay Bhatt, oud CEO van Progress Software. Ik ken hem niet, maar vind het wel jammer dat het niet iemand is met een onderwijs achtergrond. Gelukkig blijft Ray Henderson in de directie.

De dalende trend van IE blijft doorgaan en dat is natuurlijk goed met de recente bug.

De afgelopen jaren zijn er vele overnames geweest van LMS-systemen waardoor er een consolidatie is ontstaan. Het grote voorbeeld hiervan is Blackboard met de overnames van Angel Learning en WebCT. Phill Hill heeft het overzicht van de ontwikkelingen gemaakt.

The course description is:

Teachers can learn how to infuse their teaching with new mobile learning strategies by participating in the free Mobile Learning MOOC at Coursesites by Blackboard beginning August 27, 2012.

This new learning experience provides 16 weeks of training on topics ranging from authentic assessment to video podcasting. Learning is self-paced with rich multimedia and readings available 24X7. Participants can share their thoughts with other in forums and attend weekly live discussions.

The course is a MOOC, so it is free to participate, but you can also view the course as a guest. You can access the course via coursesites.com and after registration via Blackboard Mobile Learn App (institute is CourseSites).

Ook de fraude die wordt gepleegd met ghost writters wordt besproken. John Fontaine van Blackboard wordt hierin ook genoemd. Volgens hem zouden plagiaatdetectiesystemen, zoals Blackboard's SafeAssign, best zulke ghost writers kunnen detecteren:

"I've been working on classifiers that take documents and score them and build what I call a document fingerprint." The system could establish a document fingerprint for each student when they turn in their first assignments, and notice if future papers differ in style in suspicious ways.

Dit is gebaseerd op dat elke schrijver zijn eigen woordenschat heeft en daarin bepaalde voorkeuren heeft.

Als reactie hierop heeft John Fontaine op zijn eigen blog een artikel geschreven hoe je als docent het afkijken kan verminderen:

1. Cultuur en Design van de course
   Door meer constructivistische activiteiten, zoals bloggen, wiki schrijven en groepsopdrachten, te gebruiken, richt je meer op positieve vorm van leren:
   "Foster a culture that rewards contributing to the corpus of knowledge within the class.  If students are recognized for individual contributions, they will pressure their peers to do their own work rather than copy each other. "
   
   
2. Vragenbank en willekeurige blokken
   Met de huidige toetssystemen is het uitstekend mogelijk om elke student een eigen unieke toets te geven. Je moet hier uitgaan van een grote vragenbank waar willekeur vragen uitgehaald worden.
   
   
3. Willekeurige vragenvolgorde, antwoordvolgorde en steeds maar 1 vraag tonen
   Dit beperkt de mogelijkheid om af te kijken voor de student als ze in één computerzaal zitten.
   
   
4. Verander feedback opties
   Hoewel veel studenten het prettiger vinden om na een vraag meteen feedback te geven, biedt dit ook meer mogelijkheden om te spieken. Je kan er bij belangrijke examens dus beter aan doen om de feedback pas helemaal aan het eind te geven, eventueel kan je ook nog beperken hoe lang de feedback beschikbaar is voor studenten.
   
   
5. "Negative marking"
   Dit beperkt mogelijkheid voor studenten om te gokken. Elk fout antwoord geeft levert negatieve punten op. Dit is een nieuwe functionaliteit in de recente Blackboard-versie, weet niet of dit nu goed werkt.
   
   
6. Berekenvragen
   Vragen die werken op basis van een bepaalde formule geeft je de mogelijkheid om elke student met andere waarden voor de variabelen te laten werken. Afkijken heeft dan geen zin meer.
   
   
7. Toestaan van meerdere pogingen
   Doordat een student een toets meerdere keren kan doen en het belang hiervan te beperken, geef  je de student de mogelijkheid om te leren van zijn fouten en daarmee steeds beter te scoren: "By lowering the stakes of the individual quiz attempt the student is rewarded for learning rather than punished for failing. "
   
   
8. Denk als een videospelletjesontwerper
   In video games blijft de speler het keer op keer proberen om een hoger level te bereiken. In de goede spelletjes is het beheersen van het level de uitdaging en niet om het volgende level te bereiken. Zie ook Punished By Rewards.

Not only is it an interesting subject, but also good to see that Blackboard is taking the initiative to host an open course. I'm certainly participating in the course, not only to learn from Curtis, but also to see how the platform works for an open course.

These are the first big changes after they were bought by Providence Equity Partners.

Until now Blackboard had the strategy to get all their clients to one platform, Blackboard Learn. All competitors they bought were merged into this product, such as WebCT and Angel. With these announcements they are leaving this strategie. Not only are they continuing the support of Angel, but they also bought two companies that provide services for open-source alternatives to their own core product. They created a new group withing Blackboard to provide these services: Blackboard Open Source Services Group.
