At the OCWC Global Conference two courses of TU Delft OpenCourseWare have received a OCWC CourseWare award. These awards recognize outstanding course materials in two categories, Video & Multimedia and Text & Illustrations.  Five awards will be given in each category.

Delft Design Guide received the award in the Text & Illustrations category. Introduction to Aerospace Engineering I received the award in the category Video & Multimedia.

The credits go to the responsible teachers. For Delft Design Guide that are Annemiek van Boeijen en Jaap Daalhuizen en for Aerospace Engineering it is Jacco Hoekstra.

Today I got elected as board member of OCW Consortium on behave of Delft University of Technology. It is a great honour to be board member for the Consortium. I have attended many board meeting since 2008, but now I'm also allowed to vote.

The Consortium is the only international un-biased organisation on open education. Especially in times that a lot of people are talking about open education (they call them moocs), it is important that there is an organisation that keeps emphasizing OPENNESS.

MOOCs without openness are just education and this won't bring us much further in our mission to increase the access to education worldwide.

Anka Mulder is officially stepping down as President and board member of the Consortium. After 5 years her 3 terms have ended. She will stay involved with Open Education at Delft University of Technology.

And I'm impressed. OER is really helping education to get to the next level, from universities to the government. In this article by Prof. Richardus Eko Indrajit he gives a good overview of the activities in Indonesia.

The motion:

The House believes that a ban on diplomas and degrees awarded by schools and universities would have a positive impact on competence development and lifelong learning.

The speakers were:

• For: Jeff Staes and Donald Clark
• Against: Sue Martin and Kirstie Donnelly

The chairperson was Harold Elletson, former Britsh parlementsmember. All the speakers had a lot of humour, which really made this to a big success.

We are all sheep

Jeff Staes start with a set of posters that were held up by people of the audience. His argument is that we have become sheep; parents, pupils, teachers, lecturers, politicians - all marching our kids through a process that doesn’t deliver. We have 2D teaching and 2D testing that leads towards 2D thinking and 2D people who live and work in a 3D world. Where’s the passion? Where’s the real competences? Jeff delivered this with a lot of passion, humour and flair.

Donald Clark - 7 Fails

The second speaker for the motion was Donald Clark. In his typical Scottish accent he came with 7 fails:

• FAIL 1: Qualifications-led culture has crashed
• FAIL 2: Teach what is easy to test
• FAIL 3:International arms race in assessment
• FAIL 4: Distorts teaching, learning & life
• FAIL 5: Holds back adult education
• FAIL 6: Qualifications bubble?
• FAIL 7: Testing for profit

Donald already has written a nice blog about these 7 fails.

Against the motion

Kirstie and Sue had less of performance, but they had some storng arguments:

• don’t blame the degrees, the problem is how the teaching is delivered. Let’s change this!
• Diploma or no diploma is the wrong question. Are all diploma's bad for you?
• Would you get in a plane with a pilot without a diploma?
• Don't blame the degrees for the wrong way of assessment
• Joe the Plumber will be the victim of banning degrees.
• Parents and tax payers want to see the results for their investment in education the youth.
• You can criticise PISA, but it has caused new developments in our education.
• Diplomas and tests should become more relevant, but banning doesn't help. The criticism of the proponents of the motion is correct, but that's not the motion. Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater!

Winners

The proponents of motion won the debate. I voted against it, because because it is bad to force degrees, it is also bad to ban them. Diplomas still help a lot of people to a job, especially the students from a lower social environment.
I agree that we should really look at the current way we test and assess our students. Are they a good predictor for the knowledge and skills a student has?

Net zoals op de meeste andere Nederlandse universiteiten is het studierendement op de EUR niet fantastisch. Uit zijn analyse blijkt dat studenten maar gemiddeld 3 uur per dag (188 minuten) studeren:

Niet alleen de studenten schieten te kort, maar ook de organisatie van het onderwijs schiet te kort:

• Te veel parallelvakken
• Toetsen aan het einde van semester
• Veel herkansingen

Schmidt gaf tijdens zijn powertalk de volgende oplossingen:

• Remedie 1: Verander de organisatie van het curriculum
• Stap over op blokonderwijs!
• Natuurlijke variatie in aantal parallelcursussen en herkansingen
• Terugbrengen van aantal parallelcursussen met 1 levert 7% beter rendement op
• Spreiden van toetsen levert 10% beter rendement op
• Uit ander onderzoek: Negatieve relatie tussen aantal herkansingen en rendement
• Uit ander onderzoek: positieve relatie tussen aantal beslismomenten en dropout
• Remedie 2: Verminder het aantal colleges; plan zelfstudietijd zorgvuldig
• de aanname "Hoe meer onderwijs, hoe beter geleerd wordt" is incorrect. Volgens de "Wet van Vos" is dit incorrect.
• Remedie 3: Beslis compensatoir in plaats van conjunctief
• Conjunctief: alle toetsen moeten voldoende zijn
• Compensatoir: De gemiddelde prestatie moet voldoende zijn
• Psychologie eerste jaar conjunctief: 24% geslaagd
• Psychologie eerste jaar compensatoir: 58% geslaagd met 6 of hoger
• Remedie 4: Stel deadlines
• Beperk herkansingen
• Stel de norm op 60 ECTS ipv 40 ECTS.
• Introduceer harde knip in jaar 1: Wie het niet haalt, vertrekt
• Verhoog de slaagnorm van 5.5 naar een volle zes

Deze aanpassingen hebben bij de verschillende faculteiten van de EUR de rendementen behoorlijk verbeterd:

Volgens mij zouden deze remedies bij de TU Delft ook kunnen helpen. Vooral het beter inplannen van zelfstudie lijkt me een belangrijke remedie, aangezien veel TU-studenten voor zo'n 30 uur per week staan ingeroosterd.

•    Social community build around the course
•    Formative assessment: quizzes with instant feedback
•    Event characteristics: starts at a certain time and every week assignments

De twee dagen zijn voorbij gevlogen, ik heb veel goede presentaties gezien en veel mensen kunnen spreken. Er zijn volgens mij drie belangrijke redenen hiervoor:

• de presentaties waren gekoppeld aan de SIGs en die hebben allen zeer goede presentaties geselecteerd. Niet verbazingwekkend natuurlijk, de SIGs zijn de experts, dus die weten wie een inhoudelijk goed verhaal kunnen houden.
• de keynotes waren erg goed dit jaar. De openingskeynote van Anka Mulder zette meteen de toon van de conferentie. Aan de tweets en blogs kan ik zien, dan andere ook zeer positief waren over haar keynote.
• De nieuwe locatie gaf de conferentie ook weer wat nieuwe swung. Hoewel de NS nog niet helemaal meewerkte (beperkt treinverkeer tusen Utrecht en Rotterdam), vond ik de nieuwe locatie een verbetering. De parallelsessies waren veel makkelijk te bereiken, de beursvloer was goed van opzet en de catering was uitstekend. Alleen volgende keer wel zorgen voor een wifi-netwerk dat het aantal bezoekers aan kan en bijvoorkeur met Eduroam.

Al met al heb ik het ervaren als een van de beste Onderwijsdagen van de afgelopen jaren. Zowel inhoudelijk als organisatie. Complementen aan Surf dat ze gedurfd hebben.

Op het programma stonden vandaag 5 presentaties van de TU Delft. Je zou bijna denken overkill ;-)

De blik vooruit!

Als eerste mocht de directeur onderwijs en secretaris van de universiteit Anka Mulder het congres openen met haar keynote. Hieronder haar presentatie, waarin zei een duidelijk beeld schets wat instellingen te wachten staat op het gebied van Open en Online Onderwijs.

Van OpenCourseWare naar Online Education

Vervolgens gingen Sofia Dopper en Gillian Saunders-Smits in op de stappen die de TU Delft op dit moment maken op het gebied van Online Onderwijs met de start van 3 online masters.

Zoals zij aangaven hebben wij absoluut nog niet alle antwoorden, maar wij hebben wel besloten dat we het gaan doen! Hieronder de presentatie:

Digitaal toetsen

Na de lunch presenteerde mijn collega Meta Keijzer-de Ruijter over een E-merge project dat zich richt op leermaterialen om docenten te ondersteunen bij digitaal toetsen. Natuurlijk doen ze dit open en wel via het wikiwijs-platform. Opvallen was dat veel vragen die ze kreeg gingen over wikiwijs en niet specifiek over het project. Gelukkig was Robert Schuwer in de zaal om deze vragen te beantwoorden. Hieronder de presentatie:

Learning Analytics

Parallel aan deze sessie presenteerde Ellen Zillig-Straatman over de resultaten van het MAIS-project. Hierbij was ik zelf niet aanwezig.

Peer Review

In deze sessie gaf Gillian Saunders-Smit in op peer review in de praktijk. Peer review is het beoordelen van elkaars werk door gelijken. Samen met Parantion ontwikkelde de TU Delft een digitale tool voor het afnemen van peer review binnen het programma Scorion. De tool is gelinkt aan onze Blackboard-omgeving.

6 jaar OpenCourseWare

Ter geruststelling op de tweede dag van het congres staat er maar 1 TU Delft-presentatie op het programma, die van mijzelf. Samen met Marja Verstelle en Wilfred Rubens zijn wij in gegaan op wat onze drie instellingen de afgelopen jaren hebben gedaan met OpenCourseWare en waar we nu mee door gaan.
