99.9% of support emails are complaining their device isn't supported. We currently support 707 devices. Mindblowing.

Dus er zijn meer dan 1400 verschillende devices die natuurlijk allemaal verschillende resoluties hebben, verschillende processoren, verschillende hoeveelheid geheugen. Voor iOS zijn er minder dan 20. Daar komt nog bij dat iOS-gebruikers over het algemeen snel updaten naar de laatste versie. Na twee weken had al 61% zijn device geupdate naar 5.1.

Er zijn zelfs al developers die hierom stoppen met het ontwikkelen voor Android.

Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe dit straks gaat met Windows Mobile. Volgens mij komen daar ook veel verschillende devices voor.

Dit is het commentaar hierop van de ontwikkelaar van Blackboard Mobile:

Apple has begun indiscriminately rejecting apps, ostensibly for having “rounded icons” – specifically citing from their guidelines, “Apps which appear confusingly similar to an existing Apple product or advertising theme will be rejected."

It appears that we and other developers are getting caught in the crossfire between Apple and Samsung, who are fighting over an array of intellectual property rights (notably the design aspects of their platforms). This is unfortunate as our default icons have been a paradigm that we’ve utilized in over 100 app submissions. In fact, when we were first developing iStanford, some of the folks at Apple helped advise us on this particular aspect.

Dit betekent dat wij nu wel onze eigen TU-iconen kunnen gaan maken. Dit waren wij al van plan, maar functionaliteiten hadden prioriteit. Mijn IO-studentassistent is nu druk bezig met de ikonen.

De app is natuurlijk gratis en hier te downloaden:

• Android

Het is wel duidelijk waar dit jaar mijn aandacht naar toe ging. Dat heeft natuurlijk ook te maken met mijn nieuw functie.

Als je meerekent hoe lang een post online staatn, dan is het bericht over de resultaten van de TU Delft Mobile Survey 2011 het meest gelezen.

In dit paper "iPad or iFad - The reality of a paperless classroom" gaan de auteurs, 2 docenten, in op de pilot die ze hebben gedaan met een compleet papierloos klaslokaal met gebruik van iPad.

De conclusie is duidelijk:

What we are experiencing now is definitely not an iFad! The paperless classroom is a reality for both the instructor and student. I see the iPad and its educational applications as critical in the development of mobile learning. I will be doing this again!

Het artikel is de moeite waard om te lezen, ze gaan namelijk ook in op allerlei praktische problemen die ze tegen kwamen.

De universiteit heeft op hun mobile learning website trouwens nog veel meer interessante artikelen en rapporten staan over mobile learning.

The most important results are:

• More than 80% of our students use a smart phone. That’s 20% increase in a little more than 1 year.
• HTC is the most popular phone brand, closely followed by Apple
• Android is the most used platform for smart phones, followed by Apple iOS. There is a significant increase of Android and decrease of Windows since 2009
• 22% of the respondents have another mobile device, most popular is the tablet
• More than 60% of respondents access Blackboard on their phone, but you see big difference between the platforms
• iOS-users use more features of their phone, especially listening to music, watching video and social networking
• T-Mobile is the most used provider
• 47% of the respondents have Eduroam (wifi-network on campus) configured on their phone.
• 46% of the iPhone users have installed the iTU Delft app

Vandaag kwam ik artikel tegen van Matt Legend Gemmell en daar gaat hij juist veel meer in op psychologische effecten. Als je je bezighoudt met mobiel is het artikel zeker de moeite waard om te lezen.

Hieronder enkele quotes uit het artikel:

• Apps, by virtue of running on devices which we’re physically interacting with, have two frames of interaction: the app, and the device. You’re reaching through a window to do whatever you’re doing.
• A web app (frame 1) running within a browser app (frame 2) on a smartphone device (frame 3) has three frames of interaction. You’re reaching through a window, then putting your hands into a box, to perform your task.
• Arguably (albeit humorously) excluding women, humans are designed to focus the majority of our attention on a single task at a time. Interfaces which permit and even encourage this separation of concerns reduce our stress level, and facilitate concentration. Many mobile devices use an interface design which enforces a “one app at a time” interaction model.
• Native apps are the fortune of an ecosystem, and thus of a platform. For that reason, native apps tend to get free marketing, both at the user level and at the platform-provider level – and that’s never been more important than on mobile devices. Apple’s walled garden is the sleek toyshop that’s already in your customer’s pocket, and they’re willing to put your app in the window once in a while if it’s good enough.
• Platform-agnosticism is part of your politics, not your customers’ buying decision. Users couldn’t care less, particularly non-technical users.
• ... people want an experience that’s delightful, and tailored to what they want to do. Something dedicated, and designed. Something specific, and something special – and something that works with what they already have, without effort or aggravation. They want to hit a button and be subscribed, and wake up to a new issue waiting for them while the coffee machine is bubbling away.

De app was beschikbaar voor de iOS, Android, Blackberry en Java Mobile. Met de app konden de scholieren het programma bekijken, de route naar de verschillende gebouwen vinden, informatie over de bacheloropleidingen en twitter berichten zien en plaatsen met de hashtag #ODTUDelft2011. De app is ontwikkeld door de Delftse startup Conference Compass.
