In de nieuwe volume van Computers & Education staat een interessant artikel over hoe je op basis van het aantal hits van een student in een ELO-course het succes van deze student kan voorspellen. De twee hypotheses die de onderzoekers Cheryl Rammos en Errol Yudko hebben getoetst zijn:

1. Which, if any, of three predictor variables (page hits, discussion reads, or discussion posts) accounted for success in class (as measured by total quiz score)? and,
   
2. Does the resulting regression equation reliably predict outcome?
   

De uitkomst is dat page hits de enige van de drie met enige voorspellingswaarde is. Deze voorspellingswaarde was ook nog erg betrouwbaar. Als een student actief gebruik maakt van een discussion board als lezer en schrijver, leidt dat niet tot een hoger cijfer. Rammos en Yudko schrijver hierover:

Participation in online discussion requires that individual students read each of the posts written by their classmates and respond to some of those posts. This requires a great commitment of time, and while such an effort may help students to develop critical thinking skills and learn to interact with their fellows, it may also distract a student from studying the materials that are most likely to appear on the exam.
